Retablos are flat, one-dimensional paintings on tin or wood, and bultos are carved (usually wooden) 3-dimensional figures. These remarkable creations touch the soul.

Marie Luna's work is
"vibrant, alive and intense"
You can feel the passion of her work
in the soulful eyes of her creations.

Inspired by her grandmother Guadalupe’s faith, Marie Luna began painting retablos. Marie credits a lot of her traditional learning from her friend Alcario Otero, a well known santero here in New Mexico

In 2004, Marie won the State Fair First place award in retablos in Hispanic arts for La Virgin de Guadalupe. She also won a special women’s award for overall excellence in retablos, given by De Colores Galleria Women’s award of Excellence for Santa Teresa.

She juried into the Spanish market in 2003. She participates in summer and winter Spanish market in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She also participates such in local shows as the Feria Artistica and the Santero Show de San Felipe de Neri in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

She recently completed a panel of Santo Nino de Atocha for an altar screen for a church in Hernandez, New Mexico.

For two years, Marie has been the featured artist for the Hispanic Preservation League, creating the two Santiago retablos as awards to be given out.

Marie’s faith and peace reflects in her retablos. She feels that good energy must go into the process of painting a retablo because each retablo has its destination.
